The fire triangle can be described as a means of visualising the three parts required to create and perpetuate a fire. The triangle may well be referred to as the combustible triangle, but they are effectively the same thing.
The parts of the fire triangle are these: Heat, Fuel and Oxygen.
These three parts are needed for a fire to be present, so in order to protect against or put out a current fire, we must do away with a minimum of one of the elements.
Different extinguisher types are created to eliminate one or more of those components in an effort to put out a fire.
As an example, water eliminates heat and foam can stop oxygen from contacting a fire by covering it just like a blanket. To cut out the fuel source might be more challenging.
The Heat Part of the Triangle
Lacking heat, a fire can’t be made plus it can’t continue to burn. As said before the most effective method of removing heat is to apply water.
We might also eradicate heat (the ignition cause) in an electrical fire by switching off the electrical power.
In any burning structure, the hot embers can be scraped away, once more eradicating one of the heat sources and making it much easier to extinguish.
The Fuel Aspect Within the Triangle
Without fuel, a fire won’t be able to carry on and burn. Gradually it will burn itself out because the available fuel is consumed.
Nonetheless, in the event of a fire, we want to extinguish it as quickly as possible to minimise any damage. Therefore if the fuel can without danger be removed, it must be.
The fuel can be cleaned up and removed physically, which may be hazardous to try or it may be removed chemically with the proper extinguisher type.
Doing away with surrounding fuel sources can also prevent it from growing or avoid new ones from starting.
The Oxygen Component of the Triangle
Lacking oxygen, a fire may not be created or continue to burn. Oxygen might be kept from reaching a fire by applying something such as a foam fire extinguisher or even a fire blanket in particular instances.
A fire won’t typically burn itself out due to a lack of oxygen like it will when it runs out of fuel. There is usually an abundant flow of oxygen to keep a fire going indefinitely.
The tetrahedron is actually a variant of the triangle. It represents the necessity for the chemical reaction. This is the process which generates and sustains a fire.
